Out at sea but not out of touch: Can technology make seafood traceable?

“Could technology that enables fishermen to stay connected while at sea bring an end to human rights and fishing violations in the seafood industry?

Fleet One, a technology that enables voice and data connectivity via satellite, was developed by British satellite telecommunications company Inmarsat in 2014. It was installed in selected Thai fishing vessels in 2016 in a bid to boost the traceability of the business.”

“‘Nestled in downtown Oakland, California, sustainable food and agriculture startup Kuli Kuli has roots more than 7,000 miles away.

Founder Lisa Curtis was introduced to the moringa tree while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in a small town in Niger. A vegetarian whose local diet consisted mainly of millet and rice, Curtis was able to curb her malnourishment, a lack of protein and key vitamins by adding moringa to her daily regime. Her health turnaround sparked an interest in introducing the benefit of the moringa plant to North American eaters.”

Newsweek has released the results of its 2017 Global 500 Green Rankings, an annual assessment of the sustainability performance of the largest publicly-traded companies in the US and the world by revenue. This year, beauty giant L’Oréal came out on top, ranking as the top-performing global company and best performing personal products company.

Philip Morris says it’s ‘trying to give up cigarettes’ in 2018

“Tobacco giant Philip Morris International took out full-page ads in several British newspapers this week proclaiming the company’s 2018 New Year’s resolution as ‘trying to give up cigarettes.’

‘Our ambition is to stop selling cigarettes in the UK,’ the ad says, according to a screenshot from Business Insider. The message says even though it’s best for smokers to quit, many will continue to smoke.”

New calculator illustrates extent, environmental impacts of US meat consumption
