30 Years Together: Celebrating Erb’s Legacy, Community, and Vision

Thirty years ago, a single act of generosity set something extraordinary in motion at the University of Michigan. This year now marks a milestone that is both momentous and deeply personal to so many of us: the 30th anniversary of the Erb Institute’s founding. What began as a visionary partnership—a gift given with hope and heart by Fred and Barbara Erb—has blossomed into a vibrant, mission-driven program and community spanning generations of students, alumni, scholars, and changemakers at the University of Michigan and around the world.

Over three inspiring decades, the Erb Institute has served as a beacon—a place where purpose meets possibility and connection. In the lead-up to our special 30th Anniversary Celebration in Ann Arbor this September, we warmly encourage you to join us in person as we spend the year reflecting, reconnecting, and rejoicing in all that Erb has meant to you and the broader community—and in all that we aspire to do together in the years ahead.

In 1996, Fred and Barbara Erb’s cornerstone gift, paired with the extraordinary generosity of other early supporters, launched an institute unlike any other, both at the University of Michigan as well as throughout the country and world. As a bridge between the Ross School of Business and the School for Environment and Sustainability, Erb was designed to equip students with both the business acumen to move markets and the systems-based understanding needed to drive meaningful, lasting environmental, social, and economic progress.

Since then, nearly 900 students have passed through the Erb Institute as MBA/MS students and, beginning in 2020, as Erb Undergraduate Fellows. Many alumni point to their experience at Erb Institute as foundational to the impact they have had as business and sustainability leaders.

In 2026, we will honor the vision of our founding partners, commemorate the achievements of our alumni, highlight the thought leadership of our scholars, and recognize the dedication of our staff. Above all, we will celebrate the power of the Erb community itself — arguably our greatest, most enduring success. It is our community that sets us apart: showing up for and lifting one another in triumph, through challenges, and strengthening resolve to create a more sustainable world through business.

It is awe-inspiring to reflect on the institute’s 30 years, and it is equally hope-inspiring to look ahead and think about what is to come. The passion, creativity, and commitment of this community leave no doubt that the next 30 years — and beyond — will be just as bold, meaningful, and transformative. Here’s to 30 years of legacy, learning, and impact — and to the countless memories and achievements still to come!

With appreciation and optimism,

Melissa Zaksek, Erb Institute Managing Director

Charlene Zietsma, Erb Institute Faculty Director
