Terry Nelidov

Erb Institute | Business for Sustainability

Managing Director

As Managing Director, Terry leads the Erb Institute’s staff of seven to design and deliver sustainability impact across research, teaching and business engagement. The institute’s five-year strategic plan expands Erb’s traditional focus on strictly environmental sustainability to also consider social, labor and human-rights risks and opportunities for business. Likewise, Terry has expanded the geographic perspective of the institute’s work, to highlight the accelerating impact of emerging markets on sustainability worldwide.

Terry came to the Erb Institute from 25 years of promoting “business leadership of human development” across nine countries in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Terry began his career in Business Marketing at Pacific Bell in California, before going on to serve as a US Peace Corps Volunteer with an agricultural cooperative in the northern stretches of Paraguay. After studying his MBA, Terry returned to Latin America to found INCAE Business School’s Business Leadership for Sustainable Development Network in Central and South America, and then helped start up a housing company in El Salvador to pilot an innovative “for-profit human-development” business model. As Country Representative for Catholic Relief Services in Peru, Terry worked with local church partners, grassroots activists and nonprofits to promote human rights, economic development and improved mining relations. His interest in mining and community development led Terry to Business for Social Responsibility, where he was a sustainability consultant to extractive, manufacturing and agricultural companies in Latin America, Southeast Asia and China.

Terry and his partner are cycling enthusiasts, and love getting to know countries from the ground up, along dusty highways and forgotten coastlines.
