Special Projects Manager Overview

Global Detroit’s Opportunity Neighborhoods team is building a vibrant and thriving region with strong neighborhoods, successful small businesses, and, shared prosperity for all by implementing and advocating for inclusive community and economic development strategies for systems change, community cohesion, and social capital. Our team works alongside community members and institutions to ensure that the work is locally owned. We are seeking a skilled, organized and enthusiastic team member to advance this work as our Special Projects Manager. This practitioner will work across disciplines to convene and manage collaborative movements, oversee projects that reduce financial burden for low income community members and support other projects as they materialize. The Special Projects Manager will be a key member of the Opportunity Neighborhoods team, ensuring initiatives and collaborations are well-executed and inclusive from start to finish, with maximum impact. Upon hire, the Special Projects Manager will manage a region-wide collaborative of refugee services providers and an energy assistance program, working with leaders in refugee resettlement, community groups and individual community members, as well as contractors and controllers of The DTE Energy Efficiency Assistance program.

Responsibilities

  • Market and recruit global entrepreneurs for application to the Southeast Michigan Global EIR) program. This includes presenting the program to international student audiences, as well as a wide array of organizations and audiences active in the startup / innovation economy ecosystem
  • Interview, assess and help place promising global entrepreneurs with university partners
  • Recruit and support university partners to operate Global EIR programs, including conducting regular meetings with university partners and prospects, providing them with promising entrepreneur leads, and helping to track program impacts and navigate roadblocks
  • Collect data from university partners and entrepreneurs
  • Provide regular reporting on recruitment metrics, trends and other impactful measures that influence the sourcing and selection of talent
  • Coordinate and lead regional Global EIR advisory board of university partners, startup ecosystem partners and other program supporters
  • Help conduct exit interviews with entrepreneurs and collect program data to demonstrate impact of Global EIR program
  • Work with Global Detroit’s communications team to develop content to promote the Global EIR program, its successes and its impact on the regional economy
  • Work with Executive Director to secure funding and other supports to expand the Global EIR program across the region and state
  • Attend after hours events and travel, as needed

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience managing projects
  • Experience working with startup businesses and in the startup ecosystem preferred
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to set priorities, plan, and coordinate activities
  • Experience designing and implementing complex systems and tools
  • Excellent communications skills overall, particularly competent in interpersonal communication, speaking publicly and adapting messages based on the given audience
  • Proven ability to build relationships and establish credibility and rapport
  • Strong knowledge of Southeast Michigan business and startup ecosystem
  • Ability to make thoughtful decisions, while remaining adaptable in a fast-paced and evolving workplace
  • Flexible and open, willing to adjust to a fast-paced and evolving workplace
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the ability to perform in multicultural settings
  • Experience or knowledge of the startup, venture capital and innovation economies strongly preferred
