Overview:

The NYPL Energy & Projects Team is committed to implementing energy management best practices across the NYPL’s portfolio of buildings to help the City meet its ambitious emissions reductions and energy goals. NYPL is working to reduce building emissions by 49% by 2025 and 86% by 2030 (compared to 2005 levels), culminating in full decarbonization by 2050. The team works to track overall energy usage and identify energy-saving opportunities in buildings, implement energy-efficient operations and maintenance (O&M) practices, and oversee the delivery of energy-efficiency retrofit projects.
The Associate Director of Energy & Projects heads NYPL’s project management team, overseeing energy management, sustainability efforts, and responsible building practices.  This role involves setting strategic direction, managing projects, fostering key relationships, and guiding the Energy & Projects team to meet organizational goals.

Roles/Responsibilities: 

1 month, this person will:
  • Gain an understanding of NYPL’s energy and sustainability goals, the organizational structure, and how it is physically laid out.
  • Understand the specific goals and role of the Energy & Projects Team and Facilities Operations team, and how they collaborate with other departments to support the Library’s mission.
  • Perform inspections and assessments of Library building systems and conditions, and review current Facilities projects and performance metrics.
3 months, this person will:
  • Serve as a primary liaison for interagency collaborations.
  • Participate in planning meetings and develop logistical plans.
  • Oversee implementation and engage in problem-solving for ongoing projects.
6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Implement new projects and initiatives.
  • Train others on Energy conservation and sustainability practices.
  • Develop long-term goals and oversee team operations.
Overarching responsibilities
  • Review and analyze energy audits, manage energy efficiency project scoping, and estimate expected energy savings, cost savings, and emissions reductions.
  • Prepare applications for City and State funding programs.
  • Review design documents for Capital Planning projects in development to ensure compliance with local state and federal regulations and adherence to NYPL design standards.
  • Lead day-to-day energy efficiency and/or clean energy project implementation.
  • Supervise project tracking and reporting: maintain project-related documentation, including work orders, scopes of work, cost proposals, invoices, project status sheets, and progress reports.
  • Manage coordination and communication with internal stakeholders and vendors.
  • Perform site visits and provide technical expertise throughout the project life cycle.
  • Lead and support reporting of project progress and milestones to internal and external stakeholders (e.g., DCAS DEM).
  • Develop and maintain project measurement and verification (“M&V”) plan.
  • Provide comprehensive training and support to team members.

Qualifications: 

Required Education & Certifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in energy, sustainability, architecture, construction management, mechanical engineering, or related field.
  • Niagara certification or willingness to pursue such certification.
Required Experience
  • Four years of full-time satisfactory experience in project management work, such as planning, administering, managing, coordinating or expediting, for engineering and/or architectural and/or landscape architectural projects; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with the design and construction of energy efficiency retrofit projects in existing buildings, especially diverse buildings varying in age, size, and use.
  • Experience with HVAC systems, including both boiler and chiller work; HVAC controls; computerized building automation and energy management systems; variable air volume (VAV) distribution systems; steam and chilled water systems; heating and cooling applications.
  • Knowledge of and experience with ASHRAE or AEE Procedures for Commercial Buildings Energy Audits.
  • Familiarity with NYC electrical and energy codes.
  • Knowledge of energy costs and billing, energy savings calculation methodologies, and emissions calculations methodologies.
Required Skills
  • Strong understanding of building energy systems and energy efficiency technologies.
  • Familiarity with technical project management operations, including project planning, scope development, design and construction management, and project close-out.
  • Ability to analyze and present complex data sets using Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of database management on Microsoft Access and integrated workflow management systems.
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Ability to forecast and prepare budgets.
  • Commitment to customer service and demonstrated ability to effectively manage simultaneous projects.
