Welcoming Tom Lyon as the new Erb Institute’s Faculty Director

By July 2, 2020Blog

We are excited to welcome Dr. Tom Lyon as the Faculty Director of the Erb Institute. Tom holds the Dow Chair of Sustainable Science, Technology and Commerce, with appointments in both the Ross School of Business and the School of Environment and Sustainability (SEAS). Tom’s leadership will continue to expand the Erb Institute’s focus to include policy, activists and community leaders and how each can lead the development of a more sustainable world. Welcome, Tom!

“It’s an honor to return to the Directorship of the Erb Institute, a post I held from 2006-2011.  Times are very different today.  When Andy Hoffman and I arrived at Erb in the fall of 2004, we had 70 alumni.  Now we are a community of nearly 500 alumni, with another 40 MS/MBA students joining us this fall.  And we finally have an undergraduate Erb Fellows program, with 60 members in its first year!

Sustainable business has made great strides in the past 15 years.  And yet…we face a worsening climate crisis, a global pandemic, and a world where justice and equity for all people is still deferred.  Wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a tiny minority of men, while democratic institutions are increasingly frayed.  To address these challenges effectively will require collective action.  We must transform the rules by which global markets operate, so they are inclusive and take into account their full impacts on people and the planet.  We must develop new ways for business, government and civil society to work together.   We must renew our democracy so it responds to all voices.  The challenges are great, but that’s what makes them worth tackling.  I look forward to working with you to leverage the power of business and create a sustainable future.”
