The Erb Institute Sustainability Case Award recognizes and promotes the creation of key teaching materials on global sustainability and social impact. Sponsored by the Erb Institute’s Strategic Advisory Council, objectives are to raise the visibility and increase adoption of sustainable enterprise teaching cases produced by GlobaLens at UM, and to encourage the development of more such cases. Criteria included clarity of teaching objectives, timeliness of topic, quality of writing, strength of storyline, and potential to reach a broad audience.

More about the competition:
Erb Institute offers a prize for the best sustainable enterprise teaching cases published each year by the William Davidson Institute’s Globalens division.  Cases published from March 1, 2014- February 28, 2015 will be entered in next  year’s competition.

The competition aims to recognize and promote the creation of key teaching materials within the global sustainability and social impact topic areas. The competition is sponsored by the Erb Institute’s Strategic Advisory Council. Winning cases and authors will be recognized by the Deans of the Ross School of Business and the School of Natural Resources and Environment.

Marie-Lynn Miranda, Dean of the School of Natural Resources and Environment, commented, “The Erb Sustainability Case Competition exemplifies the University of Michigan’s commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research. SNRE is delighted to showcase the commitment of our faculty and students to developing innovative curricula addressing our world’s complex sustainability challenges.”

Alison Davis-Blake, Dean of the Ross School of Business, added, “I’m pleased to recognize the collaborative contributions and excellent teaching cases produced by faculty and students of Ross and the School of Natural Resources and the Environment. At the University of Michigan, we’re proud to make our world-leading expertise in sustainable business practices available as curriculum for other schools to adopt.”

To be eligible for the 2015 competition, case studies must have been published by the William Davidson Institute’s GlobaLens between March 1, 2014 – February 28, 2015 and be listed in one of the following Globalens Focus Areas: environmental sustainability, corporate social responsibility, base of the pyramid, social enterprise, public-private partnerships, and non-profit and non-governmental organizations. At least one author of each case must be affiliated with the University of Michigan – as a current undergraduate or graduate student, an alumnus who developed the case while enrolled at U-M, or a U-M faculty member. All eligible cases will automatically be entered in the competition, which will be judged by Erb Institute alumni.  First place will be awarded $1,000. Second place will be awarded $500, and third place will receive $250.
