Dr. Helfand’s work with the US EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality focuses on economic issues related to mobile sources of air pollution, including consumer vehicle choice, consumer preferences toward fuel economy, and market structure. She has longstanding interests in the occasionally perverse effects of different environmental policies, the advantages and problems of market-based approaches, and the distributional effects of environmental programs.
