The Future of Business: Responsible MBAs
It’s not breaking news that business schools across the country are paying attention to issues of sustainability, responsibility and ethics.
For example, at University of Michigan more than 100 students are now enrolled in a dual degree program at the Erb Institute, a partnership between the business school and School of Natural Resources and Environment. Students are knowledgeable about issues like sustainable agriculture and alternative energy, and they have the management skills to complement their passion for sustainable business.

One Plus One Equals…
Some students hope a separate graduate degree will make their M.B.A. that much more valuable

Are two graduate degrees better than one? Ryan Heller, who recently transformed himself from rock-band guitarist into a cable-network media manager, seems to think so.
“I felt the combination of these two degrees was going to make me a little more unique and give me that extra look for a job,” says Mr. Heller, age 32.

Promoting social justice globally
Tina Tam, who received a dual master’s degree from the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise this year, has worked to promote global social justice by helping provide rural communities with access to renewable energy. She spent the summer of 2010 in China helping to provide households with access to clean and safe energy, and looks forward to working international social enterprises to help the world’s rural communities.

U-M’s New Sustainable Food Initiative to Buy Local

With the University of Michigan announcing the launch of a $14 million sustainability initiative this week, local farmers and producers are likely to see a benefit, officials said.
U-M President Mary Sue Coleman said one of the university’s new environmental sustainability goals is to buy at least 20 percent of its food from local and sustainable sources by 2025. The university’s initiative fits in with the broader “buy local” movement that’s sweeping the food industry.

President Mary Sue Coleman Announces New U-M Sustainability Goals

The Erb Family Foundation approves $1.5 million in grants to renew its support for Detroit area arts and cultural organizations. Three new grants included multimedia coverage of Detroit Publlic Television’s Great Lakes Week and a stewardship guide for Ontario’s Lake Huron landowners. View the September grants here (pdf).
